This year we will be focusing on learning new skills and sharpening the ones we have.
Functional Signs: We have acquired a new computer program that will help students in learning the signs that they see all around them and their meanings. These are vitally important to understand when out in the community. We will practice the understanding of these signs when we go out on Community Based Instruction (CBI).
Community Based Instruction (CBI): This is the time for students to practice what they have been learning in the classroom out in every day life. We will go to restaurants, go to different stores, make purchases and go on more traditional field trip experiences. This gives the students the chance to handle money and practice math skills in real life situations.
Vocational Tasks: These are simple assembly tasks that will help students follow directions and complete a task. These tasks are setting the stage for the students to have a job in the future. They can be a simple as putting a lid on a jar to being able to follow picture directions as to how many of each object goes into a container.
Math: Students will be working towards their personal goals as well as some functional math goals. Knowing how to count money and how to spend it is going to make a big difference in your student's life.
Reading: We will be utilizing the PCI curriculum for reading as well as using some fantastic ideas from Pintrest to make spice things up.
Schedules: Our classroom runs on two 8 minute rotations and then a 5 minute break (so about 20 minutes of work, followed by a break time). Each student uses a visual schedule and picture matching to know what is coming up in their schedule.
Cooking: The two essential skills classroom divide up for cooking and recycling time. Our cooking group focuses on following recipes, measurement and kitchen safety. Look for the recipe to come home in backpacks and try it out with your family!
